Central Virginia Community College has been awarded a grant from
the Department of Education to be used toward the statewide
expansion of its Summer Career Academies Program. This program,
now ten years young, is an ideal way to inspire middle school
students to explore their career options. CVCC's Center for
Workforce Development, in alliance with the Region 2000
Technology Council and the Region 2000 Career Pathways through
Tech Prep Educational Consortium, sponsors high technology
summer career academies for middle school & high school
students. These academies are high-quality career exploration
events with a planned curriculum, hands-on activities, skill
building projects, industry tours, and guest speakers.
The CVCC Summer Career Academies Expansion Project has the
purpose of expanding its successful Summer Academy model with
Virginia’s community colleges. Those colleges wishing to pursue
starting a summer academy program in their region were invited
to submit an application for consideration of inclusion in the
grant project. A $5,000 subgrant will be awarded to the
following colleges:

to the subgrant, CVCC is committed to assisting these colleges
with the development of their programs. A statewide
teleconference was held in February giving a brief introduction
to the expansion project. A statewide Webinar was
presented in mid-March, expanding on the "how-to's" of building
a successful summer academies program. Supplemental
materials to support this project have also been provided by
CVCC's Center for Workforce Development for community college
grantees.
