Tips for Successful Interviewing
Network with friends, family, clubs, schools and community organizations. Seek out contacts who work within companies that you're interested in.
Know your résumé.
Formulate questions for a friend to ask you and practice different answers. The more you practice, the more comfortable you'll feel in the interview. Ask for feedback.
Call to confirm your interview time. Arrive at least 15—20 minutes early to the interview.
Dress professionally. The first impression is the most important.
Bring several copies of your résumé along with you to the interview.
Shake hands with your interviewer and anyone else you meet. A firm handshake, good eye contact and a positive attitude will make a strong first impression.
Use S.T.A.R. (Situation/Task, Approach, Results) stories. Describe the situation or task you faced, the approach you took, and the results you achieved.
Ask job—related questions as a strategy to position yourself as the ideal candidate for the job opportunity. Research the company and use this time to sell yourself.
Follow through after your interview with a thank you note and phone call. Hint: Remember to ask the interviewer for a business card or his/her contact information before leaving the interview.
