1. Where is the Student Success Center?
The Student Success Center is now located in Amherst Hall, Room 2502.
2. Can you tutor me in a high school class?
The Student Success Center can only tutor students who need assistance in courses in which they are currently enrolled at CVCC. This includes dual-enrollment classes. All others should seek private tutoring, request permission to use the SSC's computer tutorials in math, grammar, and reading, or see the Distance Education Coordinator (Susan Beasley) about using the Plato tutorials.
3. Can you tutor me in a class I plan to take at CVCC in the future?
The Student Success Center can only tutor students who need assistance in courses in which they are currently enrolled at CVCC.
4. Can you help me prepare for a standardized test (SAT, PRAXIS, COMPASS, etc.)?
Those who need help with standardized tests should seek private tutoring or see the Distance Education Coordinator (Susan Beasley) about using the Plato tutorials.
5. Is there a charge tutoring?
Tutoring in the Student Success Center is a free service offered to CVCC students.
6. Do I need to make an appointment for tutoring? Are walk-ins welcome?
It is preferred that students make appointments ahead of time. Some subjects (e.g., math and IST courses) require appointments due to the high demand for tutoring. Walk-ins are welcome, but there is no guarantee that a tutor will be available at that moment.
7. What do I need to bring with me for tutoring?
Students need to bring their course syllabus, course material, current assignments, and graded assignments/tests. This material is needed so that the tutor and student may pinpoint problem areas and work through them effectively.
8. What if there is no tutoring being offered for the course I need help in?
Students may complete a Course Request Form, requesting that a course be tutored. If a tutor is hired to assist with this course, we will contact students and let them know.
9. I want to become a Peer Tutor. What do I do?
First, assess yourself. Do you have a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the subject you wish to tutor? Do you have a friendly attitude leavened with patience and a desire to help others learn? If you answered "Yes" to both these questions, stop by the center to pick up an application form and have an instructor complete a recommendation form (both available on this site). Submit the forms to the SSC Coordinator. If there is an opening, you may be contacted.
