Merritt Hall Exhibit Celebrates Black History Month With Shakespeare Prints

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/2/3/11 – In February, Central Virginia Community College’s Merritt Hall Gallery will celebrate Black History Month with “Shakespeare in Sable: Images of Black Actors and Actresses in Shakespeare”.  The exhibition features a selection of prints, programs and photos from the personal collection of Rick Tyler, Assistant Professor of Communications and Theatre at Central Virginia Community College.   Tyler collected most of the pieces from theatre shows he attended in his travels to England, Canada and Oregon, and secondhand bookstores.

“I have been an avid theatre-goer, as well as a theatre practitioner since I was in high school.  I have collected much of the materials to use for educational purposes, particularly since I started teaching. I think this exhibit provides an important link to our cultural life and enhances our understanding of ourselves and our history.”

The work will hang from February 9 until March 4, with an opening reception to be held on Friday, February 11, from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m.  The public is invited to meet Professor Tyler and discuss his collection.
