Merritt Hall Exhibit Showcases Photographs of England by Rick Tyler

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/10/27/10—Rick Tyler, Assistant Professor of Communications and Theatre at Central Virginia Community College, will exhibit his photographs of England at the College during November and December. The Merritt Hall exhibition, entitled “An English Odyssey: Journeys in Search of Theatre, History, Literature, and Art,” features photographs taken during a nineteen year period, during which the professor traveled to London, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford, Bath, York, Birmingham, Chichester, Hay-on-Wye in Wales, Warwick, Worcester, Hereford, and to rural sites such as Stonehenge and the Lake District.

“I went on what I call marathon theatre-going trips, seeing as many shows as I possibly could in the short time I had,” says Professor Tyler, “but I was also able to visit other historical/tourist sites and take many day trips out of London and Stratford-upon-Avon.”

All the photographs are color and were taken with a 35 mm Canon EOS10s film camera. Professor Tyler explains that he took the photos to enhance lectures for his theatre students as well as to capture souvenirs of his journeys for himself. After nearly twenty years of traveling to England and recording his travels, he discovered he has a wealth of images of England to share.

The work will hang from November 5 until December 31, with an opening reception to be held on Friday, November 12, from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m. The public is invited to meet the photographer and to discuss the images and the locations.

“I was once asked what was my idea of a great vacation,” says Professor Tyler. “It’s to fly to London and go to museums during the day and the theatre at night.” He is also pleased that his exhibition will be hanging on the walls on Merritt Hall when his theatre class puts on their first Shakespeare production, later this semester.
