FIRST LEGO League is an international program for elementary and middle school students created in a partnership between FIRST and The LEGO Group in 1998. Each September, FIRST LEGO League announces the annual challenge to teams, which engages them in authentic scientific research and hands-on robotic design. Students work alongside adult mentors to design, build, and program robots to solve real world challenges. After nine intense weeks, the competition season culminates at high-energy, sports-like tournaments.
CVCC sponsors the tournament, in part, through a grant provided by Tech Prep in Virginia. The Lynchburg tournament is currently the largest regional competition in the Commonwealth. Winners will be given an opportunity to participate in a statewide competition.
The vision of the FIRST Lego League, as expressed by its founder Dean Kamen, is "to transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.
