CVCC Summer Career Academies Program Continues to Expand
Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/8/2/10 During the first week of August, Central Virginia Community College, in alliance with the Region 2000 Tech Prep Consortium and the Region 2000 Partnership, are conducting high-technology career academies for local middle and high school students.
This is the twelfth year CVCC has offered these dynamic and hands-on educational adventures that explore such diverse and exciting subjects as aviation technologies, crime scene investigation, nuclear technologies, building trades, culinary arts, advanced manufacturing, health and information technologies, motorsports, scientific experiments (Experiments Gone Wild), and women in engineering.
The summer career academies program continues to expand, with 250 students this year, 19 camps, at 10 different locations. Campbell County is participating, for the first time, and holding one of the three Culinary Arts camps at the Campbell County Tech Center.
The 39 sponsors this year include such companies and organizations as AREVA, Babcock & Wilcox, RM Gantt Construction, Bedford Community Health Foundation Wegmann USA, Region 2000 Technology Council, and many more.
The Academies begin on Monday, August 2, and closing ceremonies will be held Under the Big Top, in a large tent, at CVCC in the Campus Courtyard at noon on Friday, August 6.
The program is open to all middle and high school students within Region 2000 on a first-come, first-served basis. The academies are part of the larger concept of Career Pathways in which promising young students are educated and encouraged to identify and follow meaningful career paths from middle school through college and beyond.
