FIRST LEGO League is an international program for elementary and middle school students created in a partnership between FIRST and The LEGO Group in 1998. Each September, FIRST LEGO League announces the annual challenge to teams, which engages them in authentic scientific research and hands-on robotic design. Students work alongside adult mentors to design, build, and program robots to solve real world challenges. After eight intensive weeks, the competition season culminates at high-energy, sports-like tournaments.

CVCC sponsors the tournament, in part, through a grant provided by Tech Prep in Virginia. The Lynchburg tournament is currently the largest regional competition in the Commonwealth. Winners will go on to participate in a statewide competition. The state of Virginia is FIRST’s strongest and largest Lego League participant in the nation.

The vision of the FIRST LEGO League, as expressed by its founder, Dean Kamen, is "to transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.”
