CVCC Names Muriel Mickles named 2009 Outstanding Alumnus

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/3/26/09 –Central Virginia Community College has named Muriel Mickles its 2009 Outstanding Alumnus. She will give the commencement address at the College’s graduation ceremony on May 14. Dr. Mickles is currently Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at CVCC and a associate professor, having previously been a counselor at the College. She began her post-secondary education at CVCC and has served the school for over 36 years, earning graduate degrees and honors along the way.

A graduate of Campbell County High School in Rustburg, she came to Central Virginia Community College as a student when she was eighteen years old and was soon hired to work as a clerk in the records office. At the time, she was the first in her family to attend college. She went on to receive an Associate of Science Degree at CVCC, a Bachelor of Arts and Masters in Education at Lynchburg College, and an Ed.D. in Administration and Supervision from the University of Virginia. After receiving her master’s degree she counseled students for twenty-five years, helping them with career goals and required classes. She has helped thousands of students take their places in the community. At graduation many have told her, “I wouldn’t be here, if not for you.”  Popular and well-respected, she is recognized all over the city, always taking the time to chat with former students and always willing to offer advice and help.

As Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. Mickles oversees the division, works to resolve problems, hires faculty, sets up classes, works with the other deans, and, in doing so, she makes sure that the largest academic department at the College meets a standard of excellence that will benefit the students who depend on those classes for their degrees. The department encompasses all majors, since every degree program requires some work in the Humanities and Social Sciences, particularly the English courses.

Dr. Mickles has been involved in the Alliance for Excellence and Community College Ministries and their mentoring program for at-risk African American young people, encouraging them to succeed academically, socially, and professionally. Her involvement with the International Exchange Program included hosting a guidance coordinator from Scotland and traveling to Scotland herself to learn about their educational process. Dr. Mickles is also very involved with her church, Pleasant Valley Baptist, and is an accomplished gospel singer. She and her sisters have performed all over the state as the Brown Sisters and have recorded albums and CDs

Thanks to their mother’s inspiration, Dr. Mickles’s own children are highly educated, accomplished, and interested in music. Her ability to inspire and to encourage students has gone well beyond her immediate family and reached into the greater Central Virginia community with each of the many CVCC students who have become educated and productive citizens, thanks in large part to her efforts
