CVCC Celebrates Black History with Programs and Touring Theater of NC Play

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/2/05/09 – Central Virginia Community College will celebrate Black History Month with a Touring Theatre of North Carolina production of The Life and Times of Fannie Lou Hamer and with three programs sponsored by the Black Student Alliance.

The play will be presented on Wednesday, February 25 at 1:00 p.m. in the CVCC Student Center, and is sponsored by the CVCC Student Government Association, The Diversity Committee, The Cultural and International Affairs Committee, and the Alliance for Excellence. The Touring Theatre of North Carolina is a non-profit professional theater group whose productions are based on literature and historical documents.

The Life and Times of Fannie Lou Hamer explores the life of this important Civil Right activist who helped to bring voting rights to all Americans. The daughter of a Mississippi sharecropper, she began to work the cotton fields at six years of age. She became involved in the Civil Rights movement and was beaten and jailed for her efforts to gain the vote. Eventually she became a delegate to the Democratic Convention as a member of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, which challenged the all-white delegation from the state and led to the Voting Rights Act, signed by Lyndon Johnson. Faculty, staff, students, and the general public are invited to attend this powerful and thoughtful production.

In addition, The Black Student Alliance Club is sponsoring three speakers during the month of February. On February 4, James M. Davis spoke on “The Importance of Business Ownership in Today’s Economy.” Upcoming programs will include:

February 11, Anthony Andrews, Lynchburg Fire and EMS, will talk about overcoming the lack of  a support system and about how he became a firefighter.

February 18, La’Vonne Sparrow, who is featured in the January issue of Woman’s World Magazine, will present a testimonial story of dramatic weight loss.

The general public is welcome to attend these Black History Month events, all held in the CVCC Student Center at 1:00 pm, on the specified dates.
