CVCC Merritt Hall Gallery to Feature Images of Spain

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/11/7/08

“A Sojourn in Spain,” an exhibition of photographs and paintings of Spain, will open at the Merritt Hall Gallery of Central Virginia Community College on November 14 and remain until the end of December. An opening reception will be held on Friday, November 14, from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

The work reflects a journey by seven individuals through Spain, from  Picasso’s birthplace in Malaga, to Grenada, Seville, Toledo, through the legendary region of La Mancha and up to the exciting city of Madrid. Fellow travelers and artists Linda Rodriguez, Jill Markwood,  Anne Stagg, William Stagg, Frank Poynter, Lorenz Chan, Kathy Cudlin, and Justin Crank capture the countryside of southern Spain with its rolling hills and olive gardens, the Christian and Islamic architecture, flamenco dancers, urban streets further north in Spain, landscapes, cityscapes, and the small details of life that often help to define a culture.

Lorenz Chan, who teaches Spanish at the College, will exhibit two large paintings; Linda Rodriquez, Director of the CVCC Altavista Center, has captured beautiful details of Spain in small, intimate photographs, and CVCC student, Justin Crank, beautifully photographed the immediate landscape near hotels and restaurants. Photographers William Stagg, Jill Markwood, Frank Poynter, and  Kathy Cudlin have exhibited their work extensively over the years and are members of the Blue Ridge Photographic Arts Society. Markwood is the photographer for CVCC. Anne Stagg  joins her husband to exhibit her own photographs and reveals a sensitive and discerning eye for composition and detail.

Images range from flamenco performances by gypsy dancers in caves to the intricate and breathtaking architectural design of the Alhambra. There is a juxtaposition of modern and traditional Spain and a glimpse of the country’s rich and complex history.

The reception at Merritt Hall on Friday, November 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. is free and open to the public. During the month, the gallery is open during regular college hours.  For further information contact CVCC curator Kathy Cudlin at kcudlin@aol.com
