CVCC Program Receives NCCET Award

 

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/10/15/08 –Central Virginia Community College received the 2008 Exemplary Workforce Program Award from the National Council for Continuing Education and Training (NCCET) at the organization’s national convention in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 6. It was presented by NCCET President, Dr. Sally Winship, to Stan Shoun, CVCC Vice President of Workforce Development. The award is given annually to college workforce programs that excel in both training and education, and

CVCC was honored for their “Grow Your Own” program, an innovative and highly successful nuclear technologies program.

 

 “Grow Your Own” was developed by CVCC in alliance with energy companies, including  Areva NP, Dominion Power, and Babcock & Wilcox. The program was designed to create well-defined career path pipelines which extend from middle school through graduate education, in partnership with these companies. Examples of steps along the educational ladder include middle school summer academies, high school dual enrollment, CVCC’s A.A.S. degrees, the new, ground-breaking CVCC/U.Va. Engineering partnership, and research and development at the graduate level through the CAER.  Many other important opportunities exist at each level.

 

Jim Hicks, Areva NP’s Vice President of Business Integration has observed, “The Areva/CVCC  nuclear training program not only  continues to meet our company’s needs regionally, but serves as a national example for workforce development.”

 

“We are pleased to receive the NCCET award,” said Dr. Darrel Staat, President of CVCC, “It is one more illustration of the remarkable job our Center for Workforce Development is doing by envisioning and implementing programs in meaningful partnership with area business and industry.”

 

The NCCET is a national organization of educational institutions, primarily community colleges, and corporate partners. Their mission is to provide leadership in the areas of continuing education, community services, workforce development, and distance learning.
