CVCC Art Exhibit Features Sculpture and Paintings by Jane Moden

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/9/4/08 –“Still in the Works” an exhibition of paintings and ceramic sculptures by Jane Moden will open the 2008-2009 season of art exhibitions at the Merritt Hall Gallery of Central Virginia Community College. The show will hang from September 1 until the end of the month. An opening reception will be held on Friday, September 12, from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m.

Moden teaches art at VES and is also a ceramics instructor at CVCC. She has a B.A. in Art Education, with studio work in ceramics, from Buffalo State University, and a Master’s degree in Art Education, with studio work in painting, from the University of Maryland.

The artist has lived in both South America and the Middle East, prior to moving to Lynchburg in 2003. Many of her paintings are whimsical self-portraits that reflect her journey through life, with references to locations, experiences, and family.

Moden’s clay and iron oxide sculptures often take the form of masks, and a number of them are timely and often humorous references to current political figures. The very personal, inner world of her autobiographical paintings serves as counterpoint to her outward look at some of the famous personalities in the news—while her interest in both portraiture and symbolism ties the work together.

The public is invited to attend the reception and to meet the artist at Merritt Hall on Friday, September 12, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.  All works are for sale.
