Central Virginia Community College
CVCC Accepting Applicants for Engineering Program until August 11
Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/7/02/08 Central Virginia Community College is accepting a second round of applicants for their four year CVCC/U.Va. Engineering Program. There were 32 scholarships available, and 10 first round applications have been accepted at this time. CVCC will be accepting applications for the remaining 22 scholarships until August 11.
The program was begun in 2007 to meet the growing demand for engineers in Central Virginia. The University of Virginias School of Engineering, CVCCs Workforce Development, and AREVA NP have forged an agreement that would allow qualified engineering students graduating from the Community College the opportunity to earn bachelor degrees from U.Va. through studies conducted in Lynchburg. Due to its success, the program has expanded its curricula to include a discipline in wireless technology in addition to mechanical, electrical, and material science course studies.
The Governors $300,000 Discretionary Funds award and the recent $2 million National Science Foundation grant make it possible to provide one and two-year scholarships to these students. In addition, participating companies offer scholarships that can cover part or all of the four years in the program.
Applicants already selected for the program come from a variety of area schools including Amherst High School, Appomattox County High School, Jefferson Forest High School, Liberty High School in Bedford, Chancellor High School in Fredericksburg, Fishburne Military Academy in Waynesboro, and one candidate holds a bachelors degree from Lynchburg College.
