CVCC to Announce New Center for Amherst

Much-anticipated College Satellite to Open in the Fall

Amherst, VA /Media Release/ -- State and local leaders will gather at the Amherst County Administration Building, 153 Washington Street, Amherst, to announce the opening of the CVCC Amherst Center for fall, 2008. The press conference will take place on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at 5:30 p.m. and include comments from Virginia State Delegate Ben Cline, CVCC President Darrel W. Staat, Amherst County Board of Supervisors Chair Vernon Wood, and Jack Bailey, Mayor of Amherst.

The CVCC Amherst Center will be located in the Mountainview Plaza at 200 Richmond Highway in the City of Amherst. Refurbishment of the 8,000 square foot building (formerly occupied by Revco), will begin this spring.

“The purpose of a community college is to bring affordable, quality, higher education to the citizens it serves,” Staat explains. “With the creation of the CVCC Amherst Center, in tandem with our existing Centers, we have accomplished our goal of delivering community college to the community. The Amherst Center will serve both individuals and businesses with educational and training programs.”

CVCC estimates that the Center’s inaugural class will include approximately 125 students of which 20 will be designated as “Early College” students. Course work in Amherst will be taught in traditional classroom settings as well as through interactive television broadcasts from the College’s main campus in Lynchburg.

The impact of the coming Center has already become apparent in terms of economic development. Commercial Metals Company (CMC) has moved some of its operations from Farmville to Amherst to take advantage of workforce partnerships accessible through the College.

Stan Shoun, CVCC Vice President of Workforce Development and Continuing Education, reflects on the three-year effort to establishing a Center in Amherst. “The people of Amherst have been anticipating this for some time,” Shoun says. “We’ve had a number of setbacks in finding the right location and in raising the funds needed. Ben Cline came through for us by sponsoring a $300,000 appropriation from the Virginia General Assembly and, all of a sudden, everything started coming together.”

CVCC will begin taking applications for enrollment this summer. Sign up dates and times will be announced in the coming month.
