Lynchburg Dental Society Donates $41,000 toward Education

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/ -- The Lynchburg Dental Society donated $41,000 in support of a dental hygienist associate degree program that is to begin in August, 2008, at Central Virginia Community College (CVCC). The gift will be used in conjunction with a grant from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Revitalization Commission to fund program start up needs including the design and creation of a dental lab.

Dr. Thomas A. Warwick, president of the Lynchburg Dental Society, cites the overall value of providing local instruction for future dental hygienists. "This educational program is a positive step toward greater access to dental care in Central Virginia," Warwick says. "It is good for the dental profession, dental hygiene, and the greater Lynchburg community.""

CVCC President, Dr. Darrel W. Staat, agreed adding, “The contribution is significant in that it endorses the need for training dental hygienists to alleviate the shortage of technicians in Central Virginia.”

Twelve applicants will be accepted by the program manager to pursue an associate degree in dental hygiene. Virginia Western Community College will enroll the students and provide instruction at the Free Clinic of Central Virginia where a lab is being built. General education requirements toward an Associate in Applied Science degree will be offered at CVCC.
