Central Virginia Community College

Community-A-Fair Opens to Students and Job Seekers

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/ -- CVCC will host the inaugural Community-A-Fair: Building Bridges to the Workforce of Tomorrow, Saturday, February 2, 2008, on the College’s main Campus in Lynchburg. The day-long program will bring together middle and high school students, top area employers, CVCC academic advisors, financial aid consultants, armed services veterans, career seekers, and adults looking to further their education. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is open to the general public, free of charge.

Community-A-Fair was designed to highlight the changes that have occurred in the workforce throughout Central Virginia over the past two decades; to provide local solutions to meet business and industry’s increasing demand for new and high-skilled labor. Recruiters from among the area’s largest employers will be on hand to inform the public of various career opportunities that have surfaced within Region 2000 in recent years.

Community-A-Fair is sponsored by the CVCC Alumni and Friends Association. A number of the tabletop displays will be managed by former students of the College who will share their experiences while serving in the workforce.

The College will also hold an Open House for high school seniors and returning students throughout the day, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Academic advisors, financial aid consultants, and Veterans administrators will introduce to attending students the wide range of educational programs leading to lucrative career opportunities.

CVCC Alumni Coordinator Betty Kershaw Hudson, Class of 1972, is Chairperson for Community-A-Fair.

“Uniting the alumni with the future workforce of Central Virginia on this Campus is a concept long in the making,” Hudson said. “For more than forty years, CVCC has been a leader in workforce development and continuing education in Central Virginia. It is critical that we keep the community informed of the changes taking place within the infrastructure of business and industry, and expose the public to the opportunities it provides.”

CVCC offers various public workforce consulting services, programs, and events on a year-round basis to all ages as part of its ongoing “Grow Your Own” campaign – a workforce initiative intended to train and educate local citizens for future jobs provided by area industries. Early College, Stem Modules, Reading is Power, Summer Academies, FIRST Robotics, Lego League, College for Living, and College for Living Plus are just some of the programs and activities designed to elevate the overall quality of Central Virginia’s labor force.

CVCC also manages the Career One Stop Center that has found hundreds of jobs for displaced workers.
