CVCC to Exhibit Work by Artists John Black and Roger Elliott

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/ -- Artists John Black and Roger Elliott will exhibit paintings and painting-derived work in the Merritt Hall Gallery of Central Virginia Community College from November 2 through the month of December. A reception with the artists will be held on Friday, November 8, from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m.

Both artists taught at CVCC for many decades and can count quite a large number of Central Virginia residents as their former students. Both gained a devoted following of appreciative young artists, who have been inspired by Black and Elliott’s art history and studio classes and have enjoyed the amiable and knowledgeable atmosphere fostered by these two devoted teachers and fine artists. Both men also inspired their students by example: their work transcends any local connotation and is, in fact, informed by a larger understanding of the world and of the history of art.

John Black first came to Lynchburg from the University of Iowa in 1967 to be an art director at the Fine Arts Center, a job which also included teaching classes for CVCC, and eventually became a full time instructor at the College. Retiring after 33 year, Black continues to teach part-time at the Lynchburg Campus.

Roger Elliott came to Lynchburg from the University of Florida and taught at CVCC for 26 years before retiring. He became well known in the community for his work exhibited at Kaleidoscope, the Lynchburg Art Club, and for the many awards earned in those venues.

Both men continue to be active, working artists. Black characterizes his work as “painterly painting,” and believes, as Schopenhauer said, that “all art aspires to the condition of music.” Elliott works as a linear artist; a fine draftsman whose love of drawing whose love of drawing forms the basis of his work. Elliott is also known for his sense of humor in many of his fanciful, painting-derived constructions.

The artist’s reception is free and open to the public.
