CVCC October Exhibit Features Photographs of India by Jerry Carney
Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/ -- A selection of Jerry Carney's photographs of India, "Seeing India: Landscapes of the Sacred and the Heart," is on exhibit at the Merritt Hall Gallery of Central Virginia Community College until October 30, 2007. A reception with the artist will be held on Friday, October 19, from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m.
Jerry Carney has been Professor of South Asian Religions at Hampden-Sydney College since 1982. He has lived in Lynchburg since 1998. His academic focus has been on Hindu devotional traditions, that is, the love of God, as shown in the city of Vrindaban, a pilgrimage center located about 100 miles south of New Delhi. His frequent trips to Vrindaban have enabled him to document the religious life of people in formal temple settings and within less structured sites along the river Yamuna, one of the great rivers of India. On two visits since 2004, he has documented daily practices at Keshi Ghat, the most popular bathing site in Vrindaban, as well as along the pilgrimage path which rings the city. He is currently working on a documentary project about jal-seva, the provision of water to pilgrims and residents, a practice that is illustrated by three images in this exhibit.
"There is a fundamental difference between being a tourist and a pilgrim," says Carney, "and these images reflect my shared journey with people I have come to know and love." The present exhibit includes forty images of passionately-lived daily life: some explicitly religious, others showing vibrant portraits of everyday life. Many of the images show the Yamuna River in monsoon flood, masking in beautiful sunsets the dry-season pollution that threatens the river's very existence. "In India I try to keep my eyes open. There's so much more to see, so many layers of life. I have tried to 'see India' with compassionate eyes and to share it with you."
The artist's reception at Merritt Hall on Friday, October 19, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. is free and open to the public.
