William and Mary Signs Transfer Agreement with Community Colleges

CVCC Students Given an Opportunity for Guaranteed Admission

Richmond, Va. /Media Release/ -- The College of William and Mary president, Gene R. Nichol, has signed a formal agreement that guarantees qualified Virginia community college graduates admission to the Williamsburg-based institution.  The announcement came from the offices of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).

The contract stipulates that a student must be enrolled in a transfer-oriented degree program and maintain an average of no less than a 3.6 grade-point-average.  The transfer process begins with a letter of intent to transfer, a minimum 45 hours of transferable credits from one of 23 VCCS institutions, and a grade of “B” or better in Advanced Composition.

Nichol commented that, “Graduates of the Commonwealth’s community college’s have made contributions to William and Mary over the years, and we look forward to welcoming more of them to the campus.”

Chancellor Glen DuBois of the VCCS responded to by suggesting that, “Thomas Jefferson would be delighted.”  He added that the articulation agreement is, “a clear pathway for all Virginians to pursue a tremendous education.”

The guaranteed admission is one of several statewide agreements adopted this year with various public and private senior institutions.  Previously, the VCCS had contracted with Virginia Commonwealth University, Longwood University, Sweet Briar College, the School of Engineering and the School of Agriculture at Virginia Tech, and the University of Virginia.  Monty Sullivan, vice chancellor for the VCCS, suggests that additional statewide agreements are underway.

CVCC offers numerous associate degree transfer programs and will begin to enroll students in the process to complete a four year program at William and Mary.  Students interested in attending both institutions of higher education may contact the counseling offices at CVCC by calling (434) 832-7800 for further information.
