Insurance Benefits

Health Insurance: The Commonwealth of Virginia provides health care coverage to our employees through COVACare.  The employee pays a portion of the premium; however, the college pays the majority of the total cost for the basic plan.

Group Life Insurance: The premium for full-time faculty and staff is paid by the college.  The benefit is based on twice the annual salary

Optional Life Insurance: Full-time employees are eligible to purchase optional group life insurance for natural and accidental death and dismemberment for the employee and family.

Long Term Care Insurance

Long term care insurance includes a wide range of supportive, medical, personal and social services for people who need assistance for an extended period of time.  To be eligible for benefits, the insured person must require supervision or verbal direction from another person due to a severe cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer's Disease or require substantial assistance from another person in at least two of the six activities of daily living.  These include bathing, dressing, eating, continence, toileting, transferring.

Long-term Disability Insurance (Voluntary)

Staff who began employment before January 1, 1999 and did not select to enroll  in the Virginia Sickness and Disability Plan (VSDP) may purchase long term disability insurance at group rates through payroll deduction.  This plan is administered by UNUM Life Insurance Company of America.  Note:  Participants in the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program are automatically enrolled in short and long-term disability insurance at no cost. New staff are automatically enrolled in the VSDP.

The long-term disability plan, provided through UNUM:
  • Pays a regular income when you're disabled and cannot work
  • Is available without a medical exam if you sign up with 31 days of initial hire
  • Replaces up to 50% of your monthly base salary to a maximum of $5,000 per month
  • Allows you to convert to an individual policy if you terminate employment after 12 months participation in the plan
  • Determines monthly costs for the disability insurance by your salary and age.
